The Saints and Yeti 2010 delivered a wild, back-and-forth battle that needed extra time to decide a winner, with the Saints ultimately prevailing 7-6 in a game that featured a staggering 50 combined shots on goal. The sheer volume of rubber fired at the netminder was a story in itself, as the teams combined for 50 shots in regulation alone, with the Yeti peppering Saints’ goalie Skyler Roy with 32 shots through the first 60 minutes. Roy, despite a low 9.4% save rate, did just enough to keep his team in the fight, making key stops under pressure, while the Saints’ offense cashed in on their opportunities with efficiency, scoring seven goals on just 18 shots.
The scoring erupted early, with Jimmy Kontargy (#4) opening the floodgates for the home side just over five minutes in. But the Yeti responded in kind, as Caelin Cherlet (#92) netted two goals in the first period alone, including one assisted by Blake Veenstra, to keep the visitors close. The period ended 3-3 after Luke Dutchak (#21) scored for the Saints and Jaxson MacFarlane answered for the Yeti. In the second period, the Saints seized control with a power-play goal from Dutchak, his second of the game, assisted by Kontargy and Torin Gray, to take a 5-3 lead. Yeti’s Samuel Smith (#66) answered back, but Saints’ Carter Bishop netted his first of two goals early in the third, giving the home team a 6-4 cushion.
Yeti refused to quit, as Smith struck again for his second of the game, and Cherlet completed his hat trick with a goal in the third period to tie the game at 6-6 with just over two minutes left in regulation. The game needed a hero, and it was Jimmy Kontargy who delivered in dramatic fashion, scoring the game-winner just 3:57 into the overtime period to seal the 7-6 victory for the Saints. The game featured multiple penalties, including a rough minor and an unsportsmanlike conduct call on the Saints in the first period, but special teams played only a minor role. Yeti goalie Hugo Seiler was under siege, making just three saves on 18 shots, while Roy earned the win despite facing a relentless barrage from the Yeti offense.
